Hankook Kimchi

Our Story

From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, when many Koreans began settling in Vancouver, authentic kimchi was not readily available. Recognizing the need for authentic Korean kimchi, 'HANKOOK KIMCHI' was created in 1994. Founded with the fundamental goal of introducing the taste of traditional Korea to the world, 'HANKOOK KIMCHI' became the first, and first self-branded product of the leading Korean food supplier, T-Brothers.

FAQs

Kimchi is a traditional Korean fermented vegetable dish, usually made with napa cabbage and a variety of seasonings including chili pepper, garlic, ginger, and salted seafood. It is known for its distinctive spicy and tangy flavour.

Kimchi can vary in spiciness depending on the recipe and the amount of chili pepper used. Traditional kimchi is typically quite spicy, but there are milder versions available.

Kimchi can be adapted to various dietary needs. There are vegetarian and vegan versions that omit fish sauce or other animal products. However, it often contains salt and may have high sodium content, so those on a low-sodium diet should consume it in moderation.

Kimchi is rich in probiotics, vitamins, and minerals. It can aid digestion, boost the immune system, and provide antioxidants. However, its high sodium content means it should be eaten in moderation.

While kimchi is a fermented food designed to last a long time, it can still spoil if not stored properly. Signs of spoilage include an off smell, mold, or an unusually mushy texture. If in doubt, it's best to discard it.

How to store Hankook kimchi

Does the Kimchi “explode” when opening? Does the Kimchi taste more sour than usual? Is the kimchi soft?

Don’t worry. This is due to lactic acid aka fermentation, and not a sign of spoilage!

about-image

01.

Storing Hankook Kimchi in the fridge will maintain its rate of fermentation.

02.

Place a clean piece of plastic or wrap over the kimchi to minimize air exposure

03.

Always use clean utensils when serving

Properly stored kimchi can last for several months in the refrigerator. Its flavour and texture will continue to change over time, becoming more sour as it ferments. Always check for any signs of spoilage before consuming.

Traditional kimchi often contains fish sauce or salted shrimp, which are not vegan. However, there are many vegan recipes that use alternatives like soy sauce or miso paste to achieve a similar depth of flavour.
